Games for couples, 1v1 or on the same side

Short answer
Duelo is a two-player games app for couples. 18 games you play against each other or together: on two phones, or 7 of them on one phone passed across the sofa. Every result adds to a head-to-head record between the two of you that never resets. Free on iPhone and Android, and an iPhone and an Android play each other.

Against each other: short rounds, in sets

The games couples play most are quick. A round of four in a row or hot potato takes a minute or two, so a loss is forgotten by the next game and β€œbest of five” fits before the film starts. Play on two phones, one each, side by side.

Mix them. Each game rewards a different skill, so the person who wins the word games is rarely the one who wins the hidden-ship hunt.

On the same side

Some evenings do not want a winner. PIVOT! is co-op: you each carry one end of a sofa, a fridge or a wedding cake through traffic, and you get it there together or not at all. Its second season, Life together, follows a couple from a first flat to a wedding. Know Me has a winner but no rating: it is a quiz about each other, with a Couples pack of 170 questions.

On one phone, passed across the sofa

7 games have a one-phone mode for two players: Anagram Race, Mancala, Trivia Duel, Doodle Duel, Know Me, Snake Battle, PIVOT!. Good for a train, a queue, or when one of you has a flat battery.

Keeping it fun when one of you keeps winning

Real rivalries are closer than they feel. We looked at 78 pairs who had played each other at least ten times: the stronger player won a median of 61% of games, and in six pairs out of ten the lead changed hands at least once. A five-game losing streak happens in a typical rivalry, in both directions.

If one of you wins far more, rotate games, let the loser pick the next one, and give the weaker player the first move. The full numbers and more ways to keep it even β†’
